Oliver Zimmer and I both studied nationalism for our PhDs with Anthony Smith at the London School of Economics in the mid-90s. Oliver was a professor of history at the University of Durham and University of Oxford for many years, then moved to a think tank in Switzerland and now has a substack and podcast.
We had a good discussion of populism and its place in democracies, and whether it can move from the disruptive phase to the constructive phase, reforming existing institutions.
